Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.
There are just a few situations in golf that can be addressed with an intentional "chicken wing" swing, but this cool shot is a great way for advanced golfers to get out of severe downhill lies. Mel demonstrates the technique for you in this month's Mel in Motion video golf tip.
The "chicken wing" is normally something I tell my students is a no-no in the golf swing. This is because if the lead arm breaks down in attempting to hit a normal shot, it will cause either a topped shot or a slice. But to add to your short game arsenal of shots that can save you strokes around the green, you want to learn this shot that incorporates the chicken wing on the follow-through.
The Method.
Set up for this shot like a normal pitch shot with the weight all on the front leg. The backswing is also the same. But when you follow through, you keep the lower hand staying "under" and the clubface facing the sky. At the same time, you cut across the ball, causing the ball to go high and with the cutting motion, causing the lead arm to break down. The cutting motion of the shot will also put a whole lot more backspin on the shot.
Through impact, the lead arm is still straight. It only beaks down after impact due to the cutting motion. Due to the height and spin on this shot, it will stop on a dime!
This is a great addition to your short game arsenal. Add the "chicken wing" to your short game, and you will play shots you never thought yourself capable of!
