Chipping On Uneven Lies
In this month’s Mel In Motion video golf tip, Mel shows us a different approach to avoid flipping the ball on an uphill lie. Try this technique to achieve crisper shots for those tricky uphill situations.
Chipping on an uphill lie can be confusing. Most amateur golfers struggle with this shot because 1. They are not sure how to play this shot and 2. They very seldom, if ever, practice this shot.
The old theory
The old theory stands with your weight on your back foot and allows your spine to be perpendicular to the slope. This allows the clubhead to follow the slope. This is still correct. However, the higher handicaps still tend to catch behind the ball on this shot because 1. The hands are behind the ball, and 2. the weight is back, and they try and scoop the shot.
Mel’s theory
Take your lead foot and turn it straight up the slope. This now allows you to bend your lead knee and put your weight on the front foot. It also allows the hands to now move slightly in front of the ball.
This position now allows higher handicap golfers to make cleaner contact with the ball and adds another dimension to their chipping arsenal!
