It is a club that has a golf ball attached, and when you swing it, the direction of the ball gives you pretty good feedback to exactly where the clubface is at impact. For right-handed golfers, if the ball goes left, the clubface was closed at impact. If the ball goes to the right, the clubface was open at impact. If the ball strikes the ground close to where you stand, you are hitting from the top. (or casting)
