Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

This month's tip is about examining your grip.  Learning to place your hands on the golf club is one of the fundamentals of the game, but it amazes my instructors and me how many different grips we see each week.

The Basic Grip.

If you clap your hands together, you will notice that the palms are always adjacent to one another.  This is how the palms should always be with the golf grip.  Whether you have a strong grip where you can see three or four knuckles of your top hand or a weak grip where you can see only one knuckle of the top hand, the palms are always adjacent.

The Three Different Types of Grips.

Overlapping.

The overlapping grip is the most common, and about 90% of golfers use this grip.  The small finger of the lower hand overlaps the index finger of the upper hand.

Inter-locking.

Similar to the overlapping, the small finger interlaces, not interlocks with the upper hand.  This grip is ideal for golfers with meaty palms and short stubby fingers.

10 Finger.

Ideal for senior and lady golfers who do not have a lot of strength in their hands, putting 10 fingers on the club allows them a little more leverage and more clubhead speed.

All of the above grips need to have the palms adjacent to one another.  That way, whatever you do with your hands, the clubface will react accordingly. Finding your ideal grip is basically a trial and error exercise.  Test all 3 and find which one is the most comfortable for you and stick with it!
