Today we talk about an often misunderstood term - Over the Top! First, understand the term. Second, know how to prevent it. Plus, an elegant drill to provide feedback for that initial move you are looking for!
What does "Over the Top" mean?
The difference between the backswing and the downswing we use the term "over the top." However, when the downswing path is over the top of the backswing path, we call that an over-the-top swing.
How is it caused?
Starting the downswing with a spin-out of the hips causes the over-the-top move. In other words, no forward bump. Or starting the downswing with the arms moving out and away from the body on the downswing.
How to Correct it!
Start the downswing with a slight lateral hip bump. This moves the weight from the back foot to the front foot. This keeps the hips square to the target line. In conclusion, this is the move that is critical to preventing the over-the-top move!
Understanding the Term "Over the Top" is the first step in getting this move out of your golf swing once and for all!
