Laying the club off on the backswing is a problem some golfers have when trying to get the backswing "on-plane." Laying off the club happens when the lead arm rotates on the backswing, and the clubhead gets too far on the inside, sometimes allowing the club's shaft to get almost parallel to the ground. This is a sure way to "come over the top" because, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Stand at home on an outside wall and let your butt touch the wall. Then, try and take your club back without touching the wall. I suggest you do this with a club shorter than a 6 iron, and at first, I suggest a pitching wedge or sand wedge. To stop laying off the club to hit straighter shots, do not hit the wall on your backswing!
The Method:
Start practicing taking the club back slowly until you can take your regular speed backswing and not touch the wall. Then head out to the practice range and see if you can get the same sensation. If not, do the drill I suggest in the video, breaking the backswing into two different pieces. It will take quite a while to feel comfortable, so don't be too hard on yourself!
A good place to check halfway back would be to look at the badge on your glove. It should be at about 90 degrees to the ground and not facing the sky. The clubhead will be either level with your hands or slightly outside. See video.
The Results:
Once you can get the club working more "up" on the backswing and not "around," you will be able to start the downswing with the club dropping down instead of coming over, resulting in straighter and longer golf shots!
