Monthly Golf Tip by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Bob Ferraro of Philadelphia suggested this month's tip.  He asks: "I have a problem "coming over the top" with my swing. What is the quickest and easiest way to remedy this?"

The Cause.

Bob, one of the most common reasons for "coming over the top" is taking the club too far on the inside, as in picture #1. So here is a simple way of  How to Stop Coming over the Top.

These faults cause the club to be "rerouted on the way up, and the club then ends up "crossing the line," and the elbow "flies."  Picture #2.  At the start of the downswing, the right forearm will move the grip outwards, and an over-the-top swing will result.

The Cure.

Work on taking the hands straight back along the toe line and then working the club up a little more vertical as in picture #3. Click here to purchase a training aid that will help get your backswing into the position!

Finally, make sure you are in the "tray position" at the top.  Actually, take a tray and put some items on it.  At the top of the backswing, the items should not tip off.  This can only happen if the right forearm is perpendicular to the ground, as in picture #4.  When you start the downswing, the elbow needs to drop down vertically into your right side.  The clubhead will now be in an ideal hitting position.

This drill will put you in a position to start the club down on the inside.  This will deliver a slightly  "inside out" clubhead path.

Practice this, and you will lose that dreaded slice forever!
