Proper hip movement plays a key role in a great golf swing, helping you maximize power. However, there's a subtlety to correct hip rotation. Not just a simple turn of the hips. It's actually a sequence of weight shift and hip rotation.
In this month's video golf tip, I explain the proper hip movement and demonstrates an easy drill you can do with a soccer ball to get a better feel for the correct motion.
What is the correct hip sequence?
Take soccer or basketball, stand in your golf posture with your arms hanging in front of you and the ball in both hands. Swing the ball back to shoulder height. Then toss the ball underhand in the same direction as you would hit a golf ball.
You will feel that the hips initiated the motion as the weight shifted from the back foot to the front foot. And then, the hips would start rotating, and the arms would move out in front of you towards the target. THAT is the motion you are looking for in a golf swing. THAT is what I call sequencing! The sequence of that throw was as natural as walking down the street. Why? Because we grew up as kids throwing a ball, and it is a natural motion for us.
Take the club and throw it down the fairway!
Take a golf club, go to the top of your backswing and say to yourself, "What would I do if I wanted to throw this club to a target in front of me. Then (not literally), imagine throwing the club down the fairway. You will feel exactly what you just felt with the soccer ball!
This is a drill you can do at home. Either throw the ball to a partner who can throw it back to you, and both of you can work on weight shift and body rotation. Or, throw the ball against a wall. Both will be very effective. Once you understand that sequencing, you will get much more power in your golf swing!
