A "fat" shot is when the club head strikes the ground before the ball. In other words, you hit the big ball before the little ball! Hitting the ball fat can be caused by one of two things or a combination of both.

Reasons.

1. Starting the downswing with your arms instead of with a lateral weight shift. As you can see in picture #1, the hip has "spun out," preventing the weight from moving to the front foot.

2. "Casting" or un-cocking the wrists too early on the downswing.  This is also caused by starting the downswing with the arms. Still, the golfers lose the angle between the right forearm and the shaft early on the downswing, again causing the club to reach the bottom of the arc too soon, resulting in a fat shot.

Cure: 1 Move!

In Preventing the fat shot - 1 Move -  the first move of the downswing is a slight lateral slide of the hips, moving the weight from the rear side to the front side. Failure to do this means the arms come down before the body has shifted to the front foot.  Also, increase the body rotation through the ball.  This 1 move will ensure you never hit a fat shot ever again!

Ensure that the angle between the right forearm and the shaft stays as delayed as possible.

Once the weight has shifted to the front foot, make sure there is a strong body rotation. This move will allow the hands to stay ahead of the clubhead, and you'll strike the ball first!

The additional benefit of doing this drill correctly is that it also increases your clubhead speed and increases your distance. You're welcome.
