Power Comes From the Ground Up!

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

In this second installment of a 2-part lesson on generating more swing power. I explain how you can get more power from your legs and how you shift weight through your swing. I also share how you can put this knowledge to use during your practice time.  Either at home or out at the course.

Follow along as I describe how to use the ground for generating power.

How does using the ground help the golf swing?

If you sit in a chair, take your feet off the ground and try to hit a golf ball, you will see that you cannot generate any power.  Watch a small child.  If you give a small child a ball and ask them to throw the ball to you, they will inevitably bend their knees and give a little jump as they try to get some power to throw the ball.  This is a clear indication that using the ground produces power.

Power comes from the legs.

Most students that I teach try to produce power by trying to swing their arms faster.  They cannot produce much power that way, surprisingly enough.

I want you to feel that you will push off with the inside of the rear foot. So if you are going to push off with the inside of the back foot, you better make sure that your weight at the top of the backswing is on the inside of the back foot.  If you allow the weight to go to the outside of the back foot, you lose that advantage.

Great little Drill.

A great little drill to feel this motion is to take a club.  Put it across your hips with the clubhead towards the rear.  Make sure the club's toe is pointing upwards now if you can imagine a ball on a long tee with the ball at the same height as the club.  Try and hit the ball by turning your hips. If you turn them, you will generate a small amount of power.  But if you push off hard with the instep of the back foot, you'll be surprised just how much speed you can generate.  Once you have done this drill about 10 times, drop the club down into your address position and take a swing focusing on the feeling you just had in the drill. Again, you will be shocked by how much speed you can deliver!  Good Golfing!
