Follow me as I walk you through the key points of hitting an effective pitch shot out of a divot.

In the final installment of this 3-part series on pitching in unusual situations, I share the key points of hitting from a divot. This can be tricky, but it's still possible to make a highly effective pitch shot with the right technique.

Club Selection.

This is now a shot for the Sand Wedge. The bounce of the sand wedge will prevent the club from digging into the ground and should slide nicely and smoothly through the divot.

Setup.

The ball is slightly back in the stance, and most of the weight is on the front foot at the address and throughout the entire shot.  Don't try and lift this shot in the air.  The Sand Wedge has enough loft to extricate this shot out of the divot quite effectively.

Technique.

You have to make sure with this shot to clear the left side.  Body rotation is important to help the club accelerate through the shot.  So make sure the lead arm, lead hip, and lead shoulder keep turning through impact.  Do this, and the club will not only get the ball out of the divot but with a nice high trajectory!  Do not try and lift the ball.  As soon as the lead arm breaks down or the spine angle changes, a topped shot will result.  Head to the range and practice this shot.  There certainly is no shortage of divots on a driving range.

I hope you enjoyed Pitching Part 3: Hitting Out Of a Divot, and you are on your way to a stellar short game.
