The Anti Over the Top Move!

The Anti Over the Top Move is a lateral move with the hips. Please remember the shoulders are attached to the hips.  So if the hips rotate, the shoulders rotate, causing the arms to move to the outside of the body, and the clubhead moves outside the arms.  This causes the club to cut across the ball at impact.  And depending on the clubface angle at impact, it will cause a slice (open clubface), a pull (closed clubface) or a shot that starts straight but fades to the right (square clubface).

The Cure.

If you are on the range, take an alignment stick, stick it into the ground, and place them outside your lead foot against it.  Take the club to the top of the backswing.  Now move the hips laterally towards the alignment stick.  When your hip touches the stick, you can now start turning the hips to allow the body to rotate.  You should finish with your hips facing the target and all your weight on the lead foot.  You should be able to pick up your back foot and not lose your balance.

As I mention in the video, there is perception and reality.  There is what you think you are doing, and then there is what you are actually doing.  These two moves are not always the same!  So when you are practicing this move on the range, don't be afraid to exaggerate.  Make a move much more than you think.  Video yourself using the V1 app and see for yourself. If you need help using the V1 app, please email me at melsolegolf@gmail.com.
