Keep your weight on the front foot when playing a bunker shot is essential to the shot's success. Several years ago, while still living in South Africa, I was practicing my bunker shots. Gary Player made the suggestion I stand on one foot to learn to pivot around my front leg. This would eliminate any unnecessary movement during my shot. Well, it helped tremendously, and I went on to become an excellent bunker player.
So for those of you that struggle to keep the weight on the front foot and tend to hit your bunker shots off your back foot, here is a drill to help.
Stand on one leg!
Take your rear foot and place it on the toe, so there is absolutely no weight on the rear leg at all. Then, go ahead and hit the shot and finish with the weight still on the front leg. I would suggest you do this at home on your lawn first, and once it becomes comfortable, hed for the practice bunker!
