Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Good Footwork and Weight Transfer are factors often overlooked in the golf swing. Get these right, and you get your upper body and lower body working together as a unit, producing optimum power.

This month we talk about footwork and weight transfer.  Good footwork in any sport is critical.  Boxers, tennis players, soccer players, and athletes worldwide are constantly working on good footwork.  Also, any sport that requires power requires a weight shift. Just imagine a tennis serve with no weight shift, a football pass with no weight shift, or a baseball pitcher with no weight shift.  None of these players would have any power.

It is no different in the golf swing.

Good footwork on the Backswing.

The tendency of many golfers is that on the backswing, the weight on the back foot rolls over to the outside of the foot.  This prevents the golfer from pushing off the back foot at the start of the downswing.  It would be like a sprinter starting a 100-meter dash off his heels.  He would have nothing to push off with. To get the correct feel of keeping the weight on the inside of the back foot, I use a teaching aid called The Power Stance.  This is an outstanding teaching aid and certainly a good investment for those golfers who tend to sway on the backswing.

Good Footwork on the Downswing.

The Power Stance also helps the golfer with the follow-through. A lot of golfers tend to "spin-out" the front foot on the follow-through.  This causes the lead hip to spin out too quickly and will affect the entire downswing motion.  The lead foot must be stable and stay in position to correctly transfer the weight to the lead side.

Once you have stabilized the lower body, your entire golf swing can start the downswing motion in the correct sequence.  More power and accuracy will be the result!
