Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.
Mel's new Faults and Fixes Series helps you diagnose your own short game problems by observing Mel demonstrating what to do and what not to do when you're working on your chipping or putting. Can you identify the problems with Mel's help in this month's Mel in Motion video golf tip?
If you watch the PGA and LPGA players, they all have a phenomenal short game. They couldn't survive out on tour if they didn't. And yet, when I teach the average amateur, they openly admit that they have poor short games. However, when I ask those golfers how much they practice their short games regularly, the answer is usually never! Most golfers can lower their scores by between 3 and 10 shots per round by working on the short game. And remember, these are shots you can practice at home if you don't have time to go to the driving range!
Cause of poor chipping.
The predominant cause of poor chipping is using too much wrist action. Most golfers tend to "flip" the wrists, trying to get the ball airborne. Unfortunately, they do not trust that the loft on the club is going to do that.
Cure for poor chipping.
Take an alignment stick, place it on the grip with most of the stick above the grip. Allow the alignment stick to be alongside your lead side. If you make a stroke that uses the wrist too much, the alignment stick will hit you in the ribs. Practice until you can hit all your shots without the alignment stick doing that!
Cause for poor putting.
Usually, the cause for poor putting is the same as chipping: too much wrist and hand movement.
Cure for poor putting.
The cure is again the same as the cure for chipping. Take the alignment and use it the same way. I practice my putting with the alignment stick in this manner at least once a week!
