Improving your weight shift.
One of the critical moves in the golf swing is the way you start your downswing. There has to be an efficient weight shift from the back foot to the front to create speed and create distance. The first move should be a lateral move of the lead hip forwards. Many golfers have what we call a "spin-out" because the student is under the impression that the lead hip should spin and not move forward.
What causes a Spin-Out?
When they first come to golf school, many of my students have the impression that at the start of the downswing, the left hip (for right-handed golfers) must immediately turn out of the way. Nothing could be further from the truth. First, there is a slight "bump" forward, moving the weight from the back foot to the front foot. Second, when your lead hip spins out, the weight stays on the back foot, and the back foot's heel will kick out. Here is a great drill to cure both maladies at the same time.
The Cure.
Place about 4 golf balls along the outside of the rear foot. As you start the downswing, if the weight shift is correct and the weight moves forward, the back foot will roll to the inside and then come up onto the toe. The golf balls will remain untouched. This is great feedback when you cannot see what you are doing. Conclusive proof that you do not have the proper weight shift technique!
Practice.
Head to the driving range and practice this drill, starting with sort shots and then hitting full shots without moving the balls. You now have a better weight shift and should notice an increase in distance and a feeling of "compressing" the ball with the clubface!
