Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.
Nothing is as consistent as consistency. Someone said sometimes. This is this month's subject matter. There is only one place where you can get everything 100% correct 100% of the time. And that is the address position! The moment the club starts moving, it is almost impossible to swing the club the same way every time. So take your time in your address position and make sure that you are 100% correct before you start that backswing.
Step 1 - Alignment.
To make sure you are aligned correctly, you need alignment sticks. These are not expensive and should be kept in your bag 365 days a year. You want them available every time you step on the range. Take the club you will hit with, place the butt end of the club against the ball, and aim it at your intended target. Lay the first alignment stick a couple of feet away and parallel to the club.
Step 2 - Ball position.
Remove the club. Take the second stick and place it at 90 degrees to the first one. This will be your ball position. My ball position for my irons is 2" inside my lead heal.
Step 3 - Distance from the ball.
Rest the club against your lead thigh and place your hands on your thighs. Slide them down until the index finger of each hand touches your kneecaps. This sets your spine angle. Now relax your arms and let them hang at 90 degrees to your shoulders. This sets the distance you should be standing from the ball.
Step 4 - Posture.
Take your club and place it over your shoulder with the grip touching the base of your spine and lean your head back until it is touching the shaft. This gives you a straight spine. Lean forward back into your posture. Take your grip.
You are now in the perfect address position for your golf swing. Practice this over and over again (even in your living room) until it is automatic. This will give you an address position that is 100% correct 100% of the time!
Grip.
Have a golf professional check your grip. When you are playing really well, take a picture of your grip. Then, when your game goes off, take another picture and compare it to the first one. Sometimes the grip will move without you even realizing it.
Mel discusses how to get consistency with the setup in this month's Mel in Motion video golf tip. This is the only time in your game where you have 100% control, and if you achieve consistency with your setup, you'll be on your way to consistent success on the course as well.
