How to Maximize your Driver Launch Angle - Technical Thursday #101.

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

Apologies regarding this video.  It shuts out about 10 seconds before the end.  I guess that camera battery died as we neared the end of this shoot, and I didn't notice it.  All that was missed was David hitting the shot.  All the important info is right there!

Mel Sole Golf School instructor David Olberding demonstrates how the proper launch angle can increase your distance.  Take advantage of this without ever changing your swing or swinging any faster.  We now have research available using the FlightScope or Trackman Launch Monitors.  What was formerly guesswork is now a fact!  If your angle of attack (the angle that the clubhead approaches the ball) is negative, in other words, you are hitting the ball slightly on the downswing. You are losing distance. What is happening in this instance is you are getting more spin on the ball. This gives a higher launch angle and less distance.

The Method :

  1. Make sure the ball position is off the instep of the front foot.
  2. Increase your shoulder tilt. Tilt your shoulders so that they are tilted about 10 degrees.
  3. Have a little more weight on the back foot.
  4. I feel like the bottom of the arc is about 2 to 3 inches behind the ball. This allows you to hit the ball slightly on the upswing.
  5. Optimum launch conditions will be about 5 degrees on the upswing.

If you do not have access to a Launch Monitor, try to find a teaching professional in your area who can measure your angle of attack with your driver.  I'm sure you won't be sorry.

If you would like to work with either David Olberding or Mel Sole in a One, Two, or Three-day school, please call 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.
